CBI Work Health Index

Helping to reduce the UK’s £180bn a year lost to poor health and productivity.

The Confederation of British Industry is working with hundreds of British businesses, HM Government, NHS England and Business for Health to help reduce the £180bn per year economic loss due to employee poor health. Developed in partnership with Hugo & Cat, the Work Health Index will enable businesses to diagnose the strength of their employee health and wellbeing initiatives and benchmark against peers.

The Work Health Index journey so far

Covering workplace policies, practices and provisions designed to support employee health and wellbeing, the WHI uses a UK wide data set to power benchmarking across four key categories, Work, Live, Move and Thrive. Businesses answer 50 key questions and are presented with a weighted score, determined by their sector and size. The data will be regularly re benchmarked as early adopters complete their surveys and the CBI furthers its partnerships.

Business impact

Launched in November 2022 to early adopters, immediate benefits to British business will be around understanding their competitiveness and making enhancements to their Employee Value Proposition. In the longer term, the data, insight and guidance will help to create better work environments that improve productivity and drive positive health outcomes.

For the CBI early benefits are already being seen via media attention and increased interest in membership.

With the employee wellness agenda front and centre in most organisations and employee retention ever more competitive, the WHI presents valuable insight today and great potential for the future. As we work with the CBI to gather feedback from early adopters, we anticipate an ambitious and dynamic product roadmap for 2023.
